The type first saw service with the RFC, (Royal Flying Corp), from June 1917, on the Western Front in France. This aircraft type was later made famous as the fighter flown by "Biggles", the fictional RFC / RAF ace brought to life by the author CAPTAIN W.E. JOHNS.
